The Big Three Car makers again go to congress. Interestingly, it is GM and Chrysler that really need help, and not Ford. Or the American branches of Japanese car makers. GM and Chrysler promise hefty reorganisations and cost cuttings, but will that solve their structural problems?
I think it is interesting to see that Ford, a company that really understood why the Japanese car makers are so competitive, and adjusted its own processes, does not really need aid, while stubborn GM and Chrysler are about to fall down. I truly hope, also for all industry workers, that GM, Chrysler and the Unions finally start to understand the structural problem is not in costs of labour, or in the pricelevels of suppliers, but in far-from-optimal processes.
